May 2002 Cyber Reader: Critical Writings for the Digital Era Neil Spiller, editor 320 pages, $39.95 Phaidon www.phaidon.com A worthy read on cyberspace theory and practice. Almost an essential book to take with us into the 22nd Century. The subject of cyberspace -- the virtual communicative space created by digital technologies -- is examined in extracts from 40 different authors. Beginning with early theoreticians like Charles Babbage and Alan Turing, or authors such as E.M. Forster, CYBER READER takes us up to the present day practical developments as well as forward-looking prognostications for the impact on culture and society. Editor Spiller presents clear introductions to each section and puts the whole into an excellent, relevant context. Learning UNIX for MAC OS X Dave Taylor & Jerry Peek 139 pages, $19.95 O'Reilly www.oreilly.com Concise and readable introduction to Unix concepts that operate under the hood of the new Macintosh OS X. From the command line (accessible through the Mac app called the Terminal) to the file system, Taylor and Peek present a clear approach to breaking down the powerful capabilities of Unix, even if you're nowhere near expert level. Once you've breezed through this book, you'll be able to download a multitude of application programs, mostly free, and be able to transfer your knowledge to other systems, such as Linux. Designing Web Sites That Sell Shayne Bowman & Chris Willis 256 pages, $40 Rockport Publishers/Peachpit Press www.peachpit.com Another fine title in the Web series from Rockport that focuses on real-world design issues. This title reaches out to practical e-commerce strategies with the trinity of critical dimensions: aesthetics, brand identity, and interactivity. The production of the book itself is (as usual for this publisher) highlighted with excellent graphics and layout, with clever writing and a seemingly endless supply of tips and insights that should go a long way to ensure success in your own Web development projects. Building Wireless Community Networks Rob Flickenger 125 pages, $24.95 O'Reilly www.oreilly.com 802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide Matthew S. Gast 446 pages, $44.95 O'Reilly www.oreilly.com Two tomes by O'Reilly addressing different aspects of building wireless networks. Flickenger's compact guide takes a relatively breezy (for O'Reilly) nuts-and-bolts approach to setting up a community wireless network, with a good project management perspective. Gast's epic compendium is everything a system or network administrator could hope to find on the subject, including "an extensive discussion of wireless security issues, including the problems with the WEP standard and a look at the 802.1x security standard." If you're just trying to hook up a system, go with Flickenger who introduces all the crucial stages of development and provides ample resource lists. Gast has produced something of an encyclopedia that more advanced users will readily access often for reference and insight. |
