The Return of the Boutique Design Firm
Who: Bob Slote, Creative Director and Founder of 500 Watts When: Thursday, January 24, 2002 Time: Networking at 6:30 PM; Program from 7-9:00 PM Where: Autodesk Executive Briefing Room Cost: Free to NBMA members; $10 for non-members Contact: Jerry Frohmader, SIG Co-Leader Bob Slote, creative director and founder of award-winning design firm 500 Watts and respected industry pundit, will speak about The Return of the Boutique Design Firm at the Art, Sound, Film & Video SIG on Thursday, January 24. He has a lot to say on the subject. In fact, hes writing a book about it. Slote knows the subject well, and can share much that we can learn from, for hes come full circle: design firm founder, employee and executive of design firms founded by others, back to design firm founder. If youre an industry old-timer, youve probably heard of Maus Haus, the boutique firm he founded before the Internet boom. He moved on from there to be creative director at Organic Online and Vivid Studios. Later, he served as VP of design at The Interactive Bureau. Today, hes back at his own boutique firm, which he founded to champion the discipline of design. Slote, who has a B.F.A. from The San Francisco Art Institute and a M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, is a sought after speaker that has graced the conference stages of CNets Builder.com Live!, Web 2001, and Comdex 2001, among others. His genius is behind creative works that have earned his firms an International Cindy Award, a Communication Arts award for design, and New Media InVision awards in the Web site and CD-ROM categories. Theyve also won an award from the New York Art Directors Club, have been recognized as a Top 100 by Video and Multimedia Producer Magazine, and have received a High Five from David Segal.
