Robert Dougherty, Art SIG leader and master illustrator, is back by popular request to preview and demonstrate Photoshop CS (aka Photoshop 8.0). Robert has worked as a free-lance designer and illustrator since 1993 and taught Photoshop for five years through the College of Marin Community Education program. He’s produced all types of graphics for web and print at DHAP Digital, Inc., in San Francisco where he’s worked for the last three years.

Adobe Creative Suite:
In October, 2003 Adobe began shipping its new line of Creative Suite graphic production software, and Photoshop CS is the flagship of the line. Robert believes that what NOT to learn is just as important as what you do learn with a deep, non-intuitive program like Photoshop. He will review the basics and demonstrate some advanced techniques.

Old and new techniques:
He’ll demonstrate the quick way to make Layer masks and Adjustment Layers. Classic color correction and the new Match Color command to make two photos share the same color range, but with naturalistic results. Quick and Dirty Levels Adjustments and the new Shadow/Highlight adjustment to modify shadows and highlights while preserving existing image midtones. Review the ancient mysteries of the Unsharp Mask filter and check out what has to be the most fun addition to Photoshop, the Filter Gallery. This allows you to preview the effects of MULTIPLE filters and even rearrange the order of the actions on your source material. Colorize with Hue/Saturation or use the new with the new Color Replacement tool without loosing original texture or shading.

Things you wished Photoshop could do:
Make your own Actions to simplify your workflow and use the Improved Batch Processing direct from the File Browser. Gather your Layers into Sets to organize and simplify your files and facilitate collaboration. Sets in Photoshop CS can be nested; you can even make Sets of Sets. New Comp Sets let you create multiple versions of the same material in one PSD by saving the combinations of Layers to be turned on or off in each Comp. Make multi-page PDFs from these Comp Sets to show your clients their alternatives. You can also output pages as HTML or animations as SWFs (Flash MX format) using ImageReady CS.

More Photoshop CS tricks-
Editable text on curved paths--just like Illustrator.
Make and save billboard-sized images up to 300,000 x 300,000 pixels!
Import digital photos in their native RAW format.
Scan a bunch of photographs at once to one PSD file then use Crop and Straighten Photos to automatically separate, straighten and save each image.

Lots of COOL STUFF to check out in the ultra-cushy Marin Community Foundation’s Redwood room on Tuesday, November 18th, 2003! See you there in Hangar #5!
