The North Bay Multimedia Association presents a continuing series of topics on programming inside the Flash environment. Actionscript is a powerful, built-in language that operates from within Flash, and is at the heart of all truly dynamic swfs. Mastering Actionscript can transport your websites and other Flash files from glorified Powerpoint presentations into the realm of full-featured applications.

This month, Marc Tanenbaum, Salon leader, wants to get you comfortable with variables and arrays. Variables are an essential tool for creating flexibility in any type of programming. We'll look at how to create variables, how to use them and what naming conventions exist to help you tell them apart. Next we'll move into Arrays, which are a great tool for handling large amounts of related data. Proper use of arrays can improve the management of data and significantly reduce the amount of code you need to type in.

To get the most out of this month's Salon, you should already be familiar with the basic use of event handlers -- e.g., onClipEvent(enterFrame) -- and variables.

This Salon is rated: BEGINNER - INTERMEDIATE

    Rating Key
  • Beginner: basic understanding of fundamental concepts, button control, handlers, properties, variables, etc.
  • Intermediate: complex math operations, arrays, objects, functions, bitwise operations, debugging, dynamic movieclip control.
  • Advanced: XML, server-side integration, remoting, multi-dimensional arrays, AI.

Marc Tanenbaum is the NBMA Web SIG leader. He is a writer, designer and Flash developer. He hangs out at flashmxfiles.com, flashgoddess.com and bit-101.com forums where he dispenses Flash and Actionscript advice to the unwary.

The Actionscript Salon series is made possible with the support of The Graphic Arts Institute. Since 1968, GAI has been a dedicated leader in providing education and training in the graphic communications industry. GAI is an Adobe Certified Training Provider.
