The new year brings lots of news and excitement for those interested in web-based delivery of 3D content. From the introduction of Anark for both Mac and Windows, Axel’s launch of v.2, special issues in top design magazines, to “thebig3d.com” contest happening this month online, Web3D is getting the “Buzz” at the start of 2003. Will this be the year web3D finally takes off?

And what's the status of old favorites? Director has built 3D into its architecture. Is it being used and by whom? What's the status of Quicktime VR? Or Adobe Atmosphere?

Veteran 3D artist and designer Larry Rosenthal sums up the prospects for the latest 3D technologies for the web like Axel, Anark, and X3D, as well as the state of some veterans (VRML, Director3d, Flash, Viewpoint,Cult). Where is 3D on the web heading, and who will get there first? Which technologies would be right for your projects and why? Come and find out!

Larry Rosenthal is well-versed on 3D tools for the Web. He created and has run StarbaseC3, which delivered the first Web3D entertainment content to AOL in 1997. The site offers stories, games and community activities applying almost every Web3D and rich media technology in use on the Web today.

Originally from New York, Larry founded the NYVRMLSIG in 1995, which was the first Web 3D-related special interest group in the nation.

More recently, he founded SFWEB3D, a group whose mission is to provide a voice for designers and developers promoting 3D on the Web. The group meets monthly to examine and demo Web 3D products and projects. For more info, contact Larry at: larryr@cube3.com.
