Did you know that Flash is one of the best compression applications on the Web for an unbelievable array of media? This means that your survival in Flash is directly related to your skill at optimization. In order to develop your superhuman Flash powers there are two elements of delivering your content with which you must do battle: the "evil twins" - Processor and Download. In this session we'll discuss how to hone your optimization powers so that you can plan ahead, optimize content during production with your superior knowledge of how Flash compresses all types of media, and test these issues with Flash's built-in tools before the project is delivered.

  • Pre-production: Storyboarding and optimization tests.
  • Understanding Flash MX compression of vector artwork, text, pixel-based media (images and video) and sound.
  • Using the bandwidth profiler to decide whether to preload your content and find performance bottlenecks.
  • Using the size report to find the elements that are bloating file size.
  • Questions on your own Flash project optimization issues.

MD Dundon was lucky enough to be one of the first Flash teachers in the world. She is the author of Macromedia Flash MX Production Techniques from Macromedia Press and the creator, in cooperation with Magnet Media (Amazon.com: Books: Macromedia Flash MX Production Techniques), of the video training CD, Inside Flash MX: Production Essentials. Currently she teaches online at sfsuonline.org , where she and her students are plotting to take over the world with Flash, one user at a time. Her work in film, photography, CGI, painting, experience design, neurophysiology and think tank R&D have revealed the obsessions that drive her business, Flash411 (www.flash411.com )- warm fuzzy data visualization, holographic design and UI prototyping.

MD, a veteran speaker at NBMA events, has a very busy schedule this month and we're delighted that she can make time to present to us. In addition to her Web SIG appearance, she will be doing a segment all about Flash on techTV's The Screen Savers on June 3rd, and is preparing two online courses for sfsuonline.org. She will also present at FlashForward in New York, July 9-11. Her topic - introducing Object-Oriented Programming - will be titled "The Objects of My Affection."

NBMA Policy for People with Disabilities

Aides may include a captioner, signer or any other assistant needed to make the disabled person's attendance to an NBMA meeting more comfortable and enriching. NBMA cannot pay for this service. However, you may qualify for state paid assistance. Contact the California Department of Rehabilitation at: www.rehab.cahwnet.gov for more information.
