Retail Media is an emerging industry that is suffering from an identity crisis. Some pioneers of the industry refer to it as narrowcasting, digital merchandising or place-baced media. No matter which moniker this industry chooses to identify with, the impact of this technology is decidedly clear.
The core of the industry provides retail stores with dynamic audio - visual media to enhance ads and promotions within the retail floor space. A multimedia display using a video wall, plasma display or interactive kiosk can help increase brand awareness and improve product knowledge at the point of sale. Many marketing professionals consider this new form of marketing to be more effective than traditional advertising. Smaller segments of this industry offer business solutions that enhance signs in public areas, change the visual appearance of a room or simply grab the attention of a target audience.

| The NBO SIG examines how emerging industries and well established businesses use multimedia technology as an alternative to traditional media. Our SIG meetings give students and professionals the opportunity to explore new employment options, network with other multimedia professionals, meet with hiring managers, and learn about how the business world uses electronic media to educate, inform, entertain, and promote their ideas. |
